We can’t control every circumstance that comes our way, but we can change and develop a positive attitude in lieu of a negative one. As we all know, life has a way of throwing us unexpected twists and turns. Some days everything seems to fall into place, while other days it feels like nothing goes right.
Attitude is more than simply being positive about something. It is like a camera. It is the lens through which we see or view the world. Our emotions, our decisions, and even our relationships are influenced through our attitude. A good attitude helps us face life’s problems with strength, hope, and determination. It doesn’t make life’s problems disappear.
A great thing about attitude is that it is something we develop as we grow. It is not something we are born with. It is something we can change as we grow up and mature. The best part is that we can change it whenever we choose to.
What Is Attitude?
Attitude is our mental and emotional response to the people, situations, and experiences we encounter every day. No two people will face the exact same challenge and respond to it in the same way. They will respond in completely different ways. One may see an obstacle, while another sees an opportunity to grow.
Our attitude often comes from many influences, including the way we were brought up, life experiences, beliefs, habits, and the company we keep. While these influences shape us, they do not define us forever. We can change the way we decide how we respond to them today, regardless of how we responded yesterday.
Why Your Attitude Matters
Have you ever noticed how some people seem to brighten every room they enter? Some others seem to carry a storm cloud wherever they go. Even though circumstances may not be very different, their attitudes certainly are. The way we handle a situation can influence others.
A positive attitude can:
- Reduce stress.
- Improve relationships.
- Help us solve problems more creatively.
- Increase confidence.
- Encourage better physical and emotional health.
- Inspire those around us.
However, a negative attitude often creates unnecessary obstacles. It can lead to frustration, bitterness, fear, and missed opportunities. When we constantly expect the worst, we often overlook the good that is right in front of us.
Change Your Attitude Change Your Thoughts
Have you ever noticed how your thoughts become your words? Our words become our actions. Our actions become our habits, and our habits sooner or later shape our character.
If we constantly tell ourselves, “I can’t,” “Nothing ever works out,” or “I’m not good enough,” our minds begin to accept those statements as truth.
Instead, try replacing those thoughts with healthier ones, like:
- “This is difficult, but I can learn.”
- “Every challenge teaches me something.”
- “Today is a new opportunity.”
- “I don’t have to be perfect—I just need to keep growing.”
Changing the way we think isn’t something that will happen overnight, but every positive thought plants a seed for a better tomorrow.
Practice Gratitude Every Day
The quickest way to improve your attitude is to focus on what you already have instead of what you don’t have.
Be grateful. Gratitude doesn’t mean you will ignore life’s struggles or hardships. It means choosing to recognize the blessings that exist alongside the struggles.
Things you might be thankful for:
- A loving family.
- A loyal friend.
- A beautiful sunrise.
- Good health.
- A favorite pet.
- A warm cup of coffee.
- The opportunity to start over.
These are simple changes. Practicing gratitude often will have us finding more things to be thankful for.
Positive Influences are Contagious
Attitudes are contagious. Whether they are positive or negative, they do rub off on us.
Did you know the people we spend the most time with influence how we think and feel? If we constantly surround ourselves with negative people, criticism, and complaining, it becomes much harder to maintain a positive outlook.
You should seek out the people who encourage you. Those who challenge you to grow and remind you of your strengths. Try searching for uplifting books, or listen to inspiring podcasts. You can spend time in nature or simply enjoy conversations with people who bring out the best in you.
Positive influences don’t eliminate problems—they simply remind us that problems don’t have to define us.
Learn from Experience
Our greatest teacher is our own life’s experiences.
Our mistakes, failures, disappointments, and setbacks are often uncomfortable; however, they also contain valuable lessons. Instead of asking yourself, “Why did this happen to me?” ask, “What can I learn from this?”
Every challenge in our life develops resilience. Every obstacle teaches us patience. We need to look at each disappointment as a stepping stone to possibly becoming something greater.
Growth often begins where comfort ends.
Choose Kindness
One of the easiest ways we can improve your own attitude is to improve someone else’s day.
Holding the door open for someone, saying good morning with a smile, a kind word, or simply listening to someone can start your day and someone else’s off to a good start. It might even change the thoughts of someone else. It can create a ripple effect far beyond what you realize.
Kindness reminds us that we all share a journey through life. We all will experience joy, disappointment, success, and loss. When we treat others with compassion, it may not only brighten their day, but it will make our hearts feel brighter as well.
Remember Every Day Is a New Beginning
No matter what happened yesterday, today offers a fresh opportunity. You don’t have to carry yesterday’s mistakes into today. You don’t have to stay discouraged because of last week’s disappointments.
Every sunrise gives us another chance to choose hope over fear, gratitude over complaints, and optimism over doubt. Your attitude is a daily decision—not a permanent condition.
Final Thoughts
Life will always have unexpected storms. There will be days that are filled with joy and days filled with heartache abounding. But through it all, your attitude remains one of your greatest strengths.
You may not be able to control the weather, the economy, other people’s choices, or every challenge life brings. What you can control is how you respond to it.
Choose gratitude.
Choose kindness.
Choose hope.
Choose growth.
When you develop a positive attitude, you won’t just change your own life—you become a light that encourages everyone around you.
After all, happiness isn’t found by waiting for life to become perfect. It begins the moment we choose to see the beauty that already surrounds us.

Unless you can say something worthy about a person, say nothing.
