I don’t know about you, but when I go to the store to buy something for my pet, I want products that help my pet. I mean, they are home alone when I have to go out for daily routines, so I want to play with them a little and give them a treat in some form or fashion. After all, they are family. I want what is best for them.
Choosing Products That Help Our Pets
I know that browsing the internet or going to a pet store can be very intimidating. It can get overwhelming because there are so many to choose from. We do want to choose the correct products. Everyone thinks we know what is best for our fur babies, but when we get to the store and see the product we thought we wanted, it may be totally inappropriate for them.
There are all kinds of foods, treats, vitamins, supplements, toys, grooming supplies, beds, dental products, cleaning products, and so much more. There are so many choices available; it becomes difficult to know what is really useful and what is not. Do they really need these items or not? Some look appealing on the shelf but may not be really needed.
What I mean is, no two pets are the same, just like people. Even if they are of the same species, they are different. It is not a one-size-fits-all, so be sure to read the labels and make good choices.
Just because someone else uses a particular product doesn’t mean you should. Their species, age, size, activity level, diet, environment, and individual needs can all make a difference.
I am not going to tell you which product to buy. Instead, I want to talk about things to consider when choosing things for your beloved pet.
Starting With The Basics
I know we will shop for everything when I go to pet supplies in the store. This is especially true in a pet store. I want to buy the appropriate food, and then those other brands pop up, and I find myself second-guessing things. But then reality hits: our budget sneaks in, and boom, we find ourselves feeling down and depressed. But, before we go down that road, ask yourself, do they really need that?
You need to ask yourself one simple question: what does my friend really need?
Of course food and fresh water are obvious necessities. Our pets also need appropriate care. Items that come to mind are their comfort, mental stimulation, exercise, grooming, and a safe environment. The types of products that best meet these needs deserve the most thought.
For food and treats, you should look for products appropriate for your pet’s particular species and life stage. Be sure to read the labels and pay attention to the recommended feeding instructions. You consider the ingredients rather than choosing something because the package has an adorable picture of an animal on it that looks like your pet.
You should give the same thoughts to treats you buy. Treats can be a fun way to reward our pets, but they need to be healthy ones. Too much of a good thing could cause your pet to gain too much weight and result in medical problems. Be mindful of that because they are like us. Too much is not good. You want to provide an overall healthy diet.
What About Vitamins and Supplements?
As we humans, thick of health, we tend to do the same for our pets. We want to give them the best we can. We tend to look for all-natural products for pets as well. However, just because it has a large amount of vitamins on the label doesn’t mean it is necessarily the best vitamin. Like people, pets may not need all the extra things listed on the label. More isn’t necessarily better.
Supplements are not always needed for our pets. Some will benefit from the supplements while others will not. Certain supplements can also interact with medications or be inappropriate for animals with particular health conditions. Be sure to check with your veterinarian if you are thinking of supplements.
If you’re considering vitamins or supplements or other health-related products for your pet’s routine, it is a good idea to talk with your veterinarian first.
Sometimes we overthink what our pet needs. The best thing we can give our pets is simply the right food, proper care, and a little extra attention.
Toys Should Be Fun—and Safe
Our pets definitely need food, water, and a safe place to sleep; however, to make their lives optimal, they need more. They also need playtime and enrichment activities. It is important for them to stay active.
Toys, like food, are not a one-size-fits-all. You must consider your particular pet. For instance, if you adopted a senior dog or cat, they may not run about as much as when they were younger. So careful consideration needs to be given.
Is the toy an appropriate size? Is it made for their species? Could pieces break off and be swallowed? Is it sturdy enough for the way your pet plays?
A toy labeled as “safe” should be checked regularly for damage. Pets have a great talent for turning the most innocent toys into something completely different!
You should replace toys that become broken and torn and throw them away. Sometimes those little pieces inside that make them squeak or rattle can become dislodged. Your pet could swallow a piece, and it would lodge in their stomach, requiring surgery to remove it. So it is best to check their toys to prevent such incidents from happening. Also, such incidents can happen if the toy has strings hanging from the toy. I have seen where it can wrap around their intestines, requiring a surgical procedure. Be mindful of what they play with. It can bring fun and enrichment to both you and your pet but can bring sorrow as well.
Grooming Products Matter Too
Grooming your pet is important. It isn’t just about making our pets look their best. It depends on the animal. Grooming can help keep coats, skin, nails, teeth, and other areas clean. It helps them stay healthy and comfortable, whether they are snuggling on the couch, playing outside, or playing on the floor. They will feel better, just like we do.
Brushes, combs, shampoos, nail-care products, dental-care products, and other grooming supplies should be chosen specifically for the animal you are using them on. If you are unsure which products are best for your pet, or if you feel uncomfortable grooming them at first, seek professional help. They will love you for it.
This is especially important with shampoos, medications, flea and tick products, and other treatments. Never assume that a product made for one type of animal is safe for another.
When you’re unsure, check the label carefully and ask your veterinarian.
Don’t Forget Your Pet’s Environment
Special attention should be given to your pets’ environment they spend their lives in. I believe it is one of the most important things to consider.
To keep your pet happy, you should consider several things. First, a soft, cozy, comfortable bed should be considered, especially if they are at home during the day when you are at work. They should have appropriate habitat accessories, safe climbing or hiding spaces, clean food and water dishes, litter supplies, or other environmental items that can make a big difference in an animal’s everyday life, which is vital to their well-being.
Just think about what your pet would naturally need for a happy day. They need to be comfortable and secure. Remember, let the products you choose fit the pet—not simply fit the room.
Read Before You Buy
As pet owners, one of the easiest and most important things we can do is slow down and read the labels.
Look for:
- The species the product is intended for
- Age or size recommendations
- Ingredients and materials
- Feeding or usage instructions
- Safety warnings
- Storage instructions
- Manufacturer information
Don’t be afraid to put something back on the shelf if the information is unclear. It’s best to be cautious.
Remember, a pretty package and a long list of promises don’t necessarily make the product a good choice.
Be Careful With Product Claims
We all want the best for our pets, and advertisers know that.
They use words such as “natural,” “healthy,” “premium,” “complete,” or “supports wellness” to catch our attention. Be sure to look beyond the front of the package and read the actual information.
Ask yourself what the product is supposed to do. Whether or not it is something your pet really needs. Also, ask whether there is reliable information behind the claim.
Remember, an informed pet owner doesn’t mean you know everything. It simply means you are willing to ask questions.
Every Pet Is Different
The most important thing to remember is that our pets aren’t identical.
Two dogs may eat different foods. Two cats may have entirely different preferences. A bird, rabbit, reptile, fish, or other companion animal will have its own unique needs.
That’s why general advice can only take us so far.
Above all, your veterinarian is the best person to consult when you’re dealing with health concerns, dietary changes, supplements, medications, allergies, unusual behavior, or other questions about your particular animal. They are your friend and your companion when it comes to your pet. If in doubt, seek them out!
A Little Thought Goes a Long Way
Choosing products for our pets doesn’t have to be complicated.
Remember, just because we have a new family member doesn’t mean we need to buy every new product that comes along. Also, we don’t have to have the most expensive food, the fanciest toys, or a cabinet full of supplements.
Sometimes caring for our animals means choosing the simple things carefully: appropriate food, safe toys, comfortable surroundings, proper grooming supplies, and products that meet their individual needs. If you have an exotic pet or reptitle, make sure to seek the advice of a veterinarian who knows about your pet.
Some veterinarians do not practice on every species. You could check with the ASPCA in your area or go to https://www.aspca.org to find someone local for you. They have a lot of information to assist you. Your Humane Shelters can also help you find the assistance you need.
And sometimes the best thing we can give them is:
It is our time.
Our attention.
Our patience.
And the love that makes us want to give them the very best life we can.
A little research, some common sense, and a lot of love can help our pets live happy, healthy, and comfortable lives.
